Growing Pains: When and How to Hire

Growing Pains: When and How to Hire is part of the Maine Women's Business Empowerment Program and is designed for women who have been in business for at least six months and who want to boost their financial confidence and skills.

Hiring your first employee without sufficient groundwork can be a real challenge--financially, legally and emotionally. This workshop provides you with an overview of the work you will need to do before, during and after your first hire so that you can minimize trouble and maximize productivity. Practical advice will be provided on crunching your numbers to make sure you can afford to hire; understanding legal issues that can come up; processing required forms and paperwork; developing job descriptions; increasing your skills as an interviewer; and orienting, training and evaluating your new employee.

You can participate in this workshop online either live in the virtual classroom, or you can access a recorded, self-paced version of the workshop where you ask the instructor questions in a discussion board/bulletin board format, or you can do both! The self-paced online option for this workshop is open to enrollment and participation for a two week period following each live workshop. To participate in this online workshop, you must have a computer on which you can download software (Windows 2000 or OS10 or above) with access to the internet (dialup is fine) and speakers or a computer headset/microphone. Generally you cannot take this workshop using a public access computers (e.g., libraries, Career Centers).

Quickbooks: Getting Started - Business Finances

Quickbooks: Getting Started

Getting Started with Quickbooks is part of the Maine Women's Business Empowerment Program and is designed for women who have been in business for at least six months and who want to boost their financial confidence and skills.

This online workshop presents the basics of using QuickBooks Financial Software for your small business. We will review the various QuickBooks options available, outline what business information you will need to collect before you begin and define the process for getting started.
